Profile of Programme

The purpose of the program is to acquire research expertise in a specific subject of Mathematics.

Key Learning Outcomes

  1. Be aware of issues of general interest related to research in Mathematics.
  2. Acquire necessary background related to their subject.
  3. Be able to read scientific papers in English and carry out literature reviews on their subject of study.
  4. Perform research on a specific subject of Applied Mathematics.
  5. Acquire knowledge to give presentations and write scientific reports related to a literature review as well as to their own research findings.
  6. Acquire knowledge to write and publish scientific proceedings and journal papers.
  7. Acquire knowledge to write and present a dissertation.

Conditions of Study

The number of places available are announced by the Graduate School with the eligibility criteria for candidates, as well as other required documents that must be attached to the application such as:

  • Bachelor’s degree from a recognised University.
  • Previous University education in a suitable subject (academic background) and grades of relevant degrees.
  • Letters of recommendation.
  • Personal interview and/or written examination (whenever deemed necessary).
The Department may also set additional criteria and quality indicators such as: (a) number of students’ publications in scientific journals, (b) students’ participation in seminars, symposia, research programmes, (c) presentations by students at conferences, (d) knowledge of foreign languages, and (e) professional experience, etc. 

Successful completion of the requirements of the Program. Up to 60 ECTS may be exempted from postgraduate courses. 

The comprehensive examinations, research proposal, research and writing stages are graded with Success / Failure. The final grade of the dissertation is registered in the last semester of its elaboration. The doctoral dissertation is graded as Success or Failure.

Our graduates are often employed in financial and consulting firms, technology companies, and banks. In addition, holders of PhD in Mathematics are employed in the public sector, in high and demanding positions, as researchers/professors in research institutions / universities or as secondary school teachers. Furthermore, the PhD in Mathematics leads, in addition to the specialized knowledge, to the development of a wider range of competencies, critical thinking and organizational spirit, which allow graduates to work in areas that are not directly related to research projects in Mathematics.
