Profile of Programme

Implemented in 2007, the Ph.D. Program in Architecture has a strong interdisciplinary character. Τhis is evident in both the students’ educational backgrounds (which are enriching to the program and the research teams) and their research activities, as well as their advisors’ areas of specialization. Ph.D. research focuses on the fields of architectural theory and history, digital communication media, technology, sustainability and urban design. Cross-fertilization between teaching and research and also with other Departments and faculties of the University is strongly encouraged. A horizontal component of the Ph.D. research constitutes “the broader discipline of Architecture, within multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary fields”. Design and interdisciplinary research projects developed, deal with the following:
•  Research in spatial history and design theory
•  Research by design processes analysis
• Architectural projects and process analyses in a broader architectural, social, historical and technological interdisciplinary context
• Design, manufacturing processes and development of prototypes in interdisciplinary environments.

Mission of Programme

The mission of the Ph.D. Program in Architecture is to promote scholarly research leading to knowledge production and innovation according to international standards of excellence, in the broader discipline of Architecture and within multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary fields. The Ph.D. Program in Architecture allows engagement with timely international architectural issues while also recognising the potentials for local architectural development. The thematic contents of the specific courses offered each semester are based on the educational and research interests of the faculty.
Research in the Ph.D. Program in Architecture encompasses the following: Architectural Theory and History, Architectural Communication Media, Architectural Technology, Digital Architectural Design and Fabrication, Energy and Environmental Design of Buildings, Ecological Urbanism, Critical Urban Practice and Design.

Key Learning Outcomes

The aim of the Department of Architecture is the education of architects and architectural researchers, thinkers and educators who can successfully perform worldwide, but who also have the knowledge and sensibility to positively influence the built environment of Europe and the Mediterranean region. In support of this, the Department of Architecture provides high quality degree program at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. These programs emphasize fundamental principles that prepare architects concerned with the challenges of meeting society’s needs in a rapidly changing environment. They also prepare the students to grasp the complexity of the contemporary world faced with social and ecological crises. Students participate in research, planning and design in an academic environment, in cooperation with the faculty, research and professional organizations.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates with Examples

The mission of the Ph.D. program of studies in architecture is to promote scholarly research leading to learning and innovation according to international standards of excellence, in the broader discipline of architecture and within multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary fields. The Ph.D. degree is research-oriented, as a way for identifying relevant international architectural issues, while promoting opportunities for local architectural development. Ph.D. research focuses on the fields of architectural theory and history, digital communication media, technology and urban design. At the same time, architectural design is considered to derive directly from these individual fields, instead that it comprises, in essence, any autonomous thematic entity.
