Profile of Programme

The Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering is one of the four departments in the newly established Faculty of Engineering at the University of Cyprus. The first undergraduate students were accepted in September 2003, while the graduate program started in January 2005.
The Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering offers a highquality graduate program both at the Master and Ph.D. level. This program emphasizes fundamental principles that prepare students for leadership roles in a challenging and rapidly changing technological world. Research and innovation are encouraged in an environment that fosters cooperation among faculty, students, industry and research organizations. The faculty in the Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering is comprised of experienced and distinguished academicians with expertise in a wide range of research fields pertinent to Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering and Materials Science and Engineering.
The objective of the Ph.D. program is to train young scientists with up-to-date knowledge and techniques in the fast growing (and of particular importance for the society) field of Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology. The students are specialized in one of the research areas of the program with the aim to create proper conditions for a successful professional career in the public or private sector, in industry or in research organizations.

Key Learning Outcomes

The program is designed to produce highly qualified graduates who

  1. Gain a strong background in the fundamentals of the field, creativity, societal sensitivity and the independence of thought required for a successful career in Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology.
  2. Obtain self-motivation and self-evaluation skills to acquire more knowledge in their area of specialization during their future professional career.
  3. As successful Materials Scientists and Engineers, identify, describe, use and understand the basic science behind the properties of materials at the nanometre scale and the principles behind advanced experimental and computational techniques for studying advanced materials.
  4. Systematically solve scientific problems related specifically to advanced and nanotechnological materials using conventional scientific and mathematical notation.
  5. Integrate new knowledge in their background to design, propose and compose new products and services.
  6. Apply their acquired knowledge and skills to a research project in the area of their specialization.
  7. Communicate clearly, precisely and effectively using conventional scientific language and are able to prepare scientific.
  8. Are able to prepare scientific reports and present their work in the scientific community
  9. Are able to teach in academic institutes and supervise research projects and young scientists
  10. Are able to lead a team for research and development in industry
  11. Develop new knowledge through research projects.

The diploma dissertation, thesis, research and writing stages are graded with Success / Failure. The final grade of the dissertation is registered in the last semester of its elaboration. The doctoral dissertation is graded as Success or Failure.
Information on the qualification exam (QE):
Doctoral students must take a Qualification Exam (QE)
Doctoral students can take up to   2 QEs (within 4th and 7th semester)
Success in the QE: a Doctoral student upgrades to a PhD candidate
In the 4th semester of studies, the student must participate in a comprehensive examination. For the purposes of the examination, the student submits a written report (up to 30 pages) containing the following information regarding the Dissertation project:
• Start date and estimated completion date
• Bibliographic Review
• Aim and originality of the research project
• Brief description of research methods and tools
• Brief description of expected results
• Expertise/skills acquired up to that time point and expected expertise/skills to be acquired by the completion of the project.
Following submission of the report, the student makes a presentation based on it in front of the 3 internal members of his/her committee. The two external members if they have been already assigned can participate as well.
The committee proceeds with an in-depth evaluation of the candidate through questions that are consistent with the research field of the dissertation and submits an evaluation report along with the report of the candidate to the Graduate Committee of the Department.
If successful, the graduate student upgrades to PhD candidate. If not successful, the student has the right to be re-examined one more time up to the 7th semester.

If the student fails for a second time, he/she cannot continue to the PhD program and may join the Master program.
