Profile of Programme

The aim of the doctoral programmes of the CEE Department is to promote scholarly research leading to discovery, learning and innovation according to international standards of excellence, in the broader discipline of CEE, as well as in related multi-disciplinary and interdisciplinary fields.

The research focuses on areas that serve the interests of Cypriot society, by identifying and providing solutions to local issues and by promoting opportunities for local development and for the improvement of life in Cyprus.

Specific Admission Requirements

The applicants to the Ph.D. program must possess the equivalent of a BSc or MSc degree in Civil and/or Environmental Engineering, or in a related field of science or engineering, from the University of Cyprus or another accredited university in Cyprus or abroad.

The number of places available are announced by the Graduate School with the eligibility criteria for candidates, as well as other required documents that must be attached to the application such as:
  • Bachelor’s degree from a recognised University.
  • Previous University education in a suitable subject (academic background) and grades of relevant degrees.
  • Letters of recommendation.
  • Personal interview and/or written examination (if provided by the Department’s internal rules).
  • Submission of preliminary research proposal for admission to a doctoral course (if provided by the Department’s internal rules).

The Department may also set additional criteria and quality indicators such as: (a) number of students’ publications in scientific journals, (b) students’ participation in seminars, symposia, research programmes, (c) presentations by students at conferences, (d) knowledge of foreign languages, and (e) professional experience, etc.

Graduation Requirements

Successful completion of the requirements of the Programme.


Students who have joined the doctoral programme after successfully completing a relevant Master programme can be credited with a maximum of 56 ECTS for graduate courses they have successfully attended previously. These 56 ECTS count towards fulfilment of the required 80 ECTS coursework.
 
The maximum number of ECTS that can be credited to students with a graduate degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering is 56, while the maximum number of ECTS that can be credited to students with a graduate degree in other fields of study is 32. The crediting of ECTS is not automatic; it is subject to the approval of the Department’s Council based on recommendations made by the CEE Graduate Studies Committee. The committee’s recommendations follow a well-documented petition by the student and relevant recommendation by his academic advisor. For the fulfilment of the required 80 ECTS coursework, the student must choose and successfully attend courses that are not the same or similar with those credited from previous studies.

Assessment and Grading

In fulfilment of the PhD diploma, the research should be documented in a dissertation. The writing of the dissertation stands for an important phase in the PhD research, assigned with 30 ECTS (in one or more semesters). Then, following the suggestion from the Academic advisor to the Committee for Postgraduate Studies, the Departmental Board approves the Examination Committee, which is composed by 5 members (at least 2 external). The Committee evaluate the dissertation and participates an open/public PhD Defence and submit the Evaluation Report to the Departmental Board for evaluation and approval.

The diploma dissertation, thesis, research and writing stages are graded with Success/Failure. The final grade of the dissertation is registered in the last semester of its elaboration. The doctoral dissertation is graded as Success or Failure.
